1. EDITORIAL COMMENT
Source: Catherine Johnston, President & CEO, ACT Canada (01/30)

I wish for you...

Normally I write about business, but in this, the first editorial of the year, I would like to talk to you personally.

This year I wish for each and every one of you - time. You can always make more money, but you simply cannot "make" time.

I wish you time to think ahead. Almost everything we do has future steps. When we think about them, plan for them and consider how to protect those future steps from the risks they may face, we have a future. When we don't think about how to make things better in the future, we have only the present.

I wish you time to reflect on those things you do remarkably well. Often they will be those things that come easily to you, but that does not take away from the accomplishment. Allow yourself to recognize your strengths and then work to improve your other skills.

I wish you time to reflect on your relationship with others; your friends, family and people whom you will never meet, but could influence. Do your best for all of them through your personal life and professional work.

I do not need to wish for you success, because if you spend your time well, your success will be immeasurable.

2. PERSON-TO-PERSON PAYMENTS GO MOBILE WITH INTERAC E-TRANSFER
Source: Interac (12/07)

Interac e-Transfer (formerly known as Interac Email Money Transfer) now provides participating financial institutions with the opportunity to allow customers to send or receive money almost instantaneously with their mobile phone or their desktop, by either using a mobile phone number or an email address. Central 1, in partnership with BC's Prospera Credit Union, and Teachers Credit Union of Ontario, are the first financial institutions to offer this new functionality.

"We are committed to serving the needs of our financial institution clients by bringing them innovative services to support and grow their businesses," said Mark O'Connell, President and CEO, Acxsys Corporation and Interac Association. "By expanding Interac e-Transfer into the mobile space, we are giving consumers more flexibility to make person-to-person payments quickly and securely."

Interac e-Transfer is the new name of Interac Email Money Transfer. With the addition of mobile to the existing online functionality, the new name better reflects the cross-channel capabilities of the service.

Interac e-Transfer is a fast, secure and convenient way to send and receive money in near real time across the country, from one bank account to another through online or mobile banking. Importantly, money never travels by email or text message; this is used only to notify the recipient and to provide the recipient with instructions on how to deposit the money.

The sender's financial institution and the recipient's financial institution transfer funds using established and secure banking procedures. Personal or financial information, such as address, phone number and bank account information, is not shared and remains private. Recipients can deposit a funds transfer by clicking on the link contained in the text message or email notification, or the link contained in the notification can be typed into a browser - no matter how the recipient is notified, the individual can deposit the transfer using any computer or mobile device connected to the Internet.

"Central 1's decision to be the first to offer the mobile functionality of Interac e-Transfer speaks to the organization's commitment to offer innovative payment options to Central 1 members and their clients," said Mr. O'Connell.

"We are pleased to work with our organizations to provide this innovative mobile payment system that leads the way in the Canadian financial system," said Oscar van der Meer, Chief Technology Officer at Central 1. "Credit unions are able to move quickly to introduce enhanced developments like Interac e-Transfer."

3. VANCOUVER'S NEW FARE SYSTEM PAVES THE WAY FOR CONTACTLESS BANK CARD TRANSIT PAYMENTS
Source: Digital Transaction News (01/27)

Vancouver's public-transportation authority has selected a $220 million fare-payment system from Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. that includes a transit-only reloadable contactless card but also the ability to accept general-purpose contactless cards.

Replacing proprietary fare cards with systems that add transit capabilities to contactless credit and debit cards issued by banks is the buzz of the North American public-transportation industry. Only Salt Lake City, however, has such open-fare capabilities systemwide. TransLink, the transportation agency for 22 municipalities in the scenic Vancouver area, decided to use a proprietary smart card based on proven technology before going to an open-fare system, a TransLink spokesperson tells Digital Transactions News. TransLink, formally the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, oversees three light-rail lines, numerous bus routes, a ferry, and a toll bridge, and also provides funding to municipalities to maintain arterial streets.

"Our main approach to this is going to a tried-and-true platform, looking at our own needs first," the spokesperson says. "We want to have a system that does what it's supposed to do first before we get fancy with it." He adds that the system "will have the capability of handling other transactions in the future."

Holders of major-brand contactless cards such as Visa payWave or MasterCard PayPass will be able to tap those cards at Vancouver train stations once fare gates based on Cubic's Nextfare technology are operational, and will be charged cash fares. That capability takes Vancouver a step beyond the proprietary contactless fare cards used in some big North American cities, including Chicago and Washington, D.C., but stops short of discarding a closed-loop card, as would a completely open-fare system.

San Diego-based Cubic and partner IBM Canada won a bidding process among three finalists that submitted requests for proposals in a process that started with eight consortiums, the spokesperson says. The $84 million base contract includes the design, construction, and installation of the system, including the card-reading fare gates, to be delivered by 2013, according to a Cubic release. After delivery, a 10-year services contract valued at about $13 million per year, plus a one-time $6 million transition cost, takes effect. The contract includes an option for five additional years of services. Seed money for the project was announced three years ago in the form of C$40 million from the province of British Columbia and $C30 million from Canada's federal government, according to the TransLink spokesperson.

About one-third of TransLink riders pay with cash while the others pay with various media that include the mag-stripe card and monthly passes. The system operates on a proof-of-payment model in which riders show roving conductors their receipts or passes. "We have been operating under a very low-tech fare system," the TransLink spokesperson says.

4. MOBILE PAYMENT DEBUTS NATIONALLY AT STARBUCKS
Source: PYMNTS.com (01/29)

Starbucks announced the launch of mobile payment in all U.S. company-operated stores, allowing customers to pay for in-store purchases with select smartphones. Building on the earlier introduction of Starbucks Card Mobile App for select BlackBerry smartphones, iPhone and iPod touch and a successful mobile payment test program, customers now have access to the largest mobile payment program in the U.S. and the fastest way to pay at Starbucks. This national program now includes nearly 6,800 company-operated stores and more than 1,000 Starbucks in U.S. Target locations.

In addition to engaging a loyal base of several million cardholders with the offering, Starbucks anticipates mobile payment will be a draw for customers looking to experience the speed, ease and convenience of paying with their mobile phone. "Today, one in five Starbucks transactions is made using a Starbucks Card and mobile payment will extend the way our customers experience and use their Starbucks Card," said Brady Brewer, vice president Starbucks Card and Brand Loyalty. "With mobile payment, the Starbucks Card platform further elevates the customer experience by delivering convenience, rewarding loyalty and continuing to build an emotional connection with our customers."

To experience mobile payment at Starbucks, customers just need to download the free Starbucks Card Mobile App for select BlackBerry smartphones, iPhone or iPod touch mobile devices. More than one-third of U.S. Starbucks customers use smartphones, of which nearly three quarters use BlackBerry smartphone or iPhone mobile devices. In addition to the mobile payment capability, the app allows customers to manage their Starbucks Card account, check their card balance, reload their card with any major credit card (iPhone users can also use the PayPal feature), check their My Starbucks Rewards status and find a nearby Starbucks store with the store locator feature.

Customers can pay with their smartphone by holding their mobile device in front of a scanner on the countertop and scan the Starbucks Card Mobile App's on-screen barcode to make a purchase. Customers have successfully adopted this technology in test markets in Seattle, Northern California, New York and more than 1,000 Starbucks in U.S. Target stores.

Mobile payment is built on the Starbucks Card platform, which continues to experience significant customer adoption. Customers loaded more than $1.5 billion on Starbucks Cards in 2010, an increase of 21 percent over 2009, driven in part by the My Starbucks Rewards program which provides benefits to customers who pay with a registered Starbucks Card at participating stores. With the introduction of the quick and easy Starbucks Card Mobile App and the mobile payment feature, customer will find yet another reason to use their Starbucks Card for payment.

"Mobile payment is just one example of how we're continually innovating on behalf of our customers to enhance the Starbucks Experience," said Brewer. "A growing segment of our customers use smartphones, and through the Starbucks Card Mobile App, we're providing them with the fastest way to pay."

6. MASTERCARD AND TELEFONICA CREATE A JOINT VENTURE TO OFFER MOBILE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS IN LATIN AMERICA
Source: PYMNTS.com (01/25)

MasterCard and Telefonica announced a joint venture to lead the development of mobile financial solutions in 12 countries in Latin America where Telefnica is present with the Movistar brand. This is a first-of-a-kind initiative where a payments and telecommunications company partner to create a new company focused on integrating the convenience and accessibility provided by mobile phones with a set of financial solutions that will work with existing electronic payment systems.

The new company, managed independently, will have a 50/50 ownership participation and will leverage banking relationships of both companies, Telefonica's telecommunications assets and MasterCard's payments expertise. The joint venture will have an open model to ensure interoperability among the banked and unbanked segments, and serve as a bridge between the financial and telecommunications sectors. It will seek to provide 87 million current and potential Movistar customers with mobile payment services that will be linked to a mobile wallet or prepaid account including money transfers, mobile airtime reload, bill payment and retail purchases, among others. In addition, some of these services such as receiving remittances may also benefit 200 million Movistar and non-Movistar mobile subscribers in the 12 Latin America markets included in the joint venture.

This initiative is a step toward achieving financial inclusion for the underserved in Latin America - positively impacting its economic development. Aside from offering convenience and security, the range of mobile financial solutions to be offered will be the most complete to date and widely accessible to all, regardless of their access to banking services.

Through this initiative, it is expected that acceptance of electronic payments will be expanded to enable what are today predominantly cash-based merchant locations and micro-businesses such as taxis, street vendors, among others, to accept mobile payments.

Financial inclusion and the development of society

As part of its objectives, the joint venture will seek to promote the financial inclusion of a high percentage of the Latin American population with difficult or no access to traditional banking systems for reasons such as low income or living in remote areas - to potentially have a positive impact to the economic development of the region.

Market research and customer surveys in Latin America both confirm that mobile phones are perceived to be convenient and safe, and therefore, an appropriate tool for financial transactions. It is also estimated that by 2014 mobile financial transactions will reach approximately US $63 billion in Latin America.

7. GIESECKE & DEVRIENT LAUNCHES OVER-THE-AIR SIM MANAGEMENT PLATFORM FOR LTE NETWORKS
Source: Contactless News (01/24)

Giesecke & Devrient announced that its Over-the-Air (OTA) SmartTrust DP platform now offers advanced SIM and mobile device management for handsets on LTE networks.

According to G&D, the expanded SmartTrust platform now provides mobile operators with a common, single platform for managing subscriber equipment regardless of network technology.

SmartTrust DP gives the choice of IP messaging supported by handset and SIM as well as the option to avoid delivering OTA messages while a subscriber is not in its home network.

With the expanded platform, the SIM can initiate an IP session with the SmartTrust DP HTTP server module. Additionally, SmartTrust DP supports polling by the SIM client, enabling periodic checks by the client to determine if a management session is required.

Beyond messaging, the platform implements functionality and services for event reception interfaces, configuration management, charging, user administration, operation and maintenance, logging, statistics, reports, data storage and an API for external access to the unified repository, says G&D.

Additionally, the modular architecture of SmartTrust DP allows mobile operators to deploy other applications such as SmartRoam for support of steering to LTE networks, SmartAct for managing LTE-specific files and SmartProvisioning for handling IMS and other data connectivity.

8. VISA APPROVES DEVICEFIDELITY'S IN2PAY MICROSD FOR USE WITH LEADING SMARTPHONE MODELS
Source: Visa (12/07)

Visa Inc. and Visa Europe announced the commercial availability of mobile contactless payments enabled by DeviceFidelity's In2Pay microSD solution. For the first time in Visa's history, a mobile contactless payment solution is now included in the list of Visa compliant products available for potential commercial deployment by financial institutions in the U.S. and select markets.

Following 18 months of technology development in partnership with Texas-based DeviceFidelity, and trials with leading financial institutions in the United States, Europe and Asia, Visa has tested and supports commercialization of In2Pay microSD for use with leading smart phones.

Smartphone models compatible for use with this landmark technology include the BlackBerry BoldTM 9650[2], the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and the Android based Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S, representing three of the leading mobile operating systems in the world. Visa expects to add additional phone models for use with this technology, including phones based on the Symbian and Windows operating systems.

"This is a historic milestone for Visa and its clients," said Bill Gajda, head of Visa Mobile. "In addition to issuing plastic magnetic stripe or chip-enabled payment cards, financial institutions can now consider offering their account holders a new technology that enables them to transform their existing phones into fully functional mobile payment devices."

From Trials to Commercial Availability

The compliance testing process for mobile devices established by Visa includes extensive technical, security and usability testing with respect to the Visa mobile payment functionality. It ensures reliable and secure Visa transactions that are compatible with the global standard for chip-enabled payments, and establishes a required signal range for all mobile contactless payments. Visa's compliance testing process ensures the combination of the phone; secure chip and mobile payment application will provide the level of user experience Visa accountholders have come to expect from Visa.

The microSD payment technology has been developed in partnership with DeviceFidelity and had previously been available only to financial institutions who were participating with Visa in mobile payment trials including some of the largest financial institutions in the U.S. - JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo Bank, US Bancorp and Bank of America. Now, Visa issuers can obtain the technology under Visa's standard contract terms and can load the Visa mobile payment application to microSD cards.

Issuers who choose to adopt the technology can provide their account holders with a tiny microSD card that can be inserted into the phone's existing memory slot to enable the device for payment. The technology is compatible with existing contactless payment terminals already installed at retail outlets worldwide and enables account holders to simply hold the phone in front a payment terminal in order to pay.

This technology also opens the way for mobile operators, retailers and other stakeholders in the payments ecosystem to partner with financial institutions to bring Visa mobile payment functionality to consumers.

"This is a significant step towards the next generation of payments, loyalty and rewards, allowing banks and retailers to build entirely new business models" says Nick Holland, Senior Analyst with Yankee Group. "Visa's announcement clearly illustrates that the future of payments will be mobile."

Financial Institutions have the option to integrate Visa's mobile payment solution into their existing mobile application, and offer additional services such as Visa transaction alerts that notify account holders in near real-time of account activity, and targeted merchant offers that are tailored to consumer lifestyle and location. Together, these services have the potential to enhance the consumer payment experience and allow account holders to better manage their payment accounts.

With nearly 5 billion mobile handsets in market around the globe, consumers everywhere have come to rely on their mobile phone as a part of everyday life. According to IDC[3], smart phone shipments globally are expected to increase 24% in 2011, helping drive continued growth in more robust and powerful mobile devices that are capable of supporting contactless payment.

9. BANKS IN VENEZUELA CHOOSE MULTOS
Source: MULTOS (12/07)

Many banks in Venezuela have begun the process of migrating their payment cards to EMV. It is an impressive feat by the technical teams, in the banks and the local organizations supporting them, to have adopted and embraced the EMV technology in such a short amount of time. The impetus behind this focus and energy is due to the banking industry jointly working with the government to ensure strong mandates are in place for migration to the more secure EMV chip cards for bank cardholders.

With a target of being ready for smart card issuance before the end of 2010, this obviously required some serious action to analyze solutions that could both reduce project risks while allowing flexibility for future requirements and yet achieve the fastest time to market. This was a key factor that led to solutions from Multos International to be chosen by a number of the largest issuers in the country. Using MULTOS technology has proven to those banks the security, flexibility and cost effectiveness of the platform and importantly, meeting the stringent timeframes required to deliver a working product into the market. Three of the top banks in Venezuela have selected MULTOS as their main platform for their MasterCard and Visa card issuing, Banco de Venezuela, Bicentenario and BBVA Provincial have already started the migration based on MULTOS. This is a great result and now brings 7 of the top 10 banks in Venezuela using MULTOS technology. This again highlights the strengths of MULTOS products in the region, with the top banks in most of the markets moving first to EMV such as Mexico, Colombia and now Venezuela, choosing to go with MULTOS technology.

Supporting these banks in Venezuela and a key partner in Latin America is NEWTECH Solutions. Newtech brings a deep knowledge of MULTOS and the right technical expertise to support EMV issuers with the tools and know-how to ensure a smooth and successful project. Having recently joined the MULTOS Consortium, Newtech continues to drive the technology in the region and is a welcome new member of the vibrant and growing consortium.

11. GARANTI BANK ROLLS OUT FIRST NFC PAYMENTS SERVICE IN TURKEY
Source: Gemalto (12/07)

MasterCard, Garanti Bank, Gemalto, and Turkish mobile phone provider Avea will go live with a so-called 'BeaverTail' NFC antenna-equipped SIM card mobile payment service in Turkey.

The service, which involved attaching a floppy antenna to a mobile phone SIM card inside the phone - will enable clients in Turkey to make contactless payments using credit, debit, public transit passes or by using bonus points from a loyalty-card scheme.

The adapted SIM cards can be picked up at participating Avea stores. BonusluAvea customers in Turkey will also be given digital coupons for gifts and discounts as part of the roll-out campaign.

Mehmet Sezgin, CEO at Garanti Bank says the bank had been using mobile stickers as part of its Tap&Go payments programme in Turkey, but wanted a better service to offer its "young customers".

Garanti Bank and MasterCard have a five year old 'experimental project' partnership for innovative payments programmes.

Garanti Bank's new mobile contactless service also relies on MasterCard's PayPass service for mass transit.

12. HYPERCOM INTRODUCES NEXT GENERATION MOBILE PAYMENT PRODUCT
Source: Business Wire (12/07)

Hypercom Corporation introduced the M5000 mobile payment terminal, the next generation multipurpose mobile payment system whose futureproof features will protect the investments of a broad spectrum of merchants worldwide, from hotels and restaurants to taxis and delivery companies.

"Merchants demand payment products that not only expedite the secure transmission of vital transaction data, but also serve as a platform to deliver value-added services to customers, independent of location," said William Rossiter, Vice President, Global Marketing, Hypercom Corporation. "With our M5000 mobile payment system, we introduce the second in a series of products that run on our next generation platform, include our industry-leading security, deliver the latest features and technology for the lowest total cost of ownership, and thus will enable merchants to deliver new services to their customers today, and well into the future."

13. OBERTHUR TECHNOLOGIES LAUNCHES NFC SIM ADAPTOR TO TURN STANDARD PHONE INTO AN NFC PHONE, ENABLING A RAPID TAKE-OFF OF NFC SERVICES
Source: Oberthur Technologies (12/08)

Oberthur Technologies launched the NFC SIM Adaptor, an innovative solution for mobile operators wanting to deploy NFC services - Payment, Transport, Retail and Loyalty - with quick time-to-market and without major investment nor handset availability constraints. Inserting an NFC adaptor in an existing handset immediately turns it into an NFC-enabled phone.

Oberthur Technologies' return of experience in supporting its customers - mobile operators, financial Institutions, transport operators and retail groups - is that one of the decisive factors that will condition end-user NFC services adoption will be the availability of attractive and cost-effective NFC equipments. Since only a few NFC phones are available at this stage and some users may not be ready to change their current handset, the best solution to accelerate market adoption is to turn phones already in the field into NFC phones.

Made up of an NFC antenna and controller attached to an NFC SIM card, the NFC SIM adaptor is a plug and play solution compatible with many fashionable smartphones and feature phones and designed to be easily inserted in the traditional SIM card slot. Future proof, when the user will buy an NFC phone he will just need to remove the antenna from the SIM and will still be able to use his NFC services.

"The NFC Adaptor supports all NFC features including battery off, tag reading and peer-to-peer. Our NFC SIM Adaptor offer is the answer for mobile operators willing to deploy NFC services in the field now while ensuring end-user adoption", said Arnaud de la Chapelle, Convergence and Solutions General Manager, Card Systems Division at Oberthur Technologies.

14. NBS TECHNOLOGIES DELIVERS SOFTWARE SOLUTION FOR TYFONE'S SIDETAPTM MEMORY CARD, ENABLING FAST CONVENIENT PAYMENT FROM MOBILE DEVICES
Source: PRWEB (12/03)

NBS Technologies (US) Inc. "NBS" announced the development of personalization scripts for Tyfone's SideTap microSD secure memory cards via SideTap API to be integrated with EMV UbiQPersoMaster personalization software enabling mobile contactless payment for Near Field Communication (NFC) applications. New and existing NBS customers using UbiQPersoMaster software can take advantage of this and play a role in the fast growing NFC market.

"Our partnership with Tyfone has empowered Financial Institutions and Card Service Bureaus to personalize payment applications on microSD cards either in a central issuance environment using PersoMaster or in an instant issuance environment using Xpressi", said Ramesh Ajitaprasad, General Manager of NBS' Software Division. "Either environment offers a safe and secure process that meets the standards of issuers and complies with VISA and MasterCard requirements."

"We are excited to have completed this integration of NBS issuance environments with the SideTap API," said Todd Nuzum, Tyfone's VP of Technology. "With this we can extend personalization to Tyfone SideTap cards using the memory card interface. This allows for higher throughput with a smaller footprint and for targeted content preloading."

Instant issuance via NFC enables a positive user experience for both organizations and their customers. Consumers will be able to quickly and conveniently personalize their data, at the distribution point, to their Tyfone SideTap memory card, providing immediate access to contactless payments. This is good news for retailers as the convenience of instant issuance, enables retailers to preload relevant content that provides consumers with pertinent offers leading to increased transactions. The technology will amplify the convenience of contactless payments, and consumers can rest assured, as it fully meets worldwide security requirements for both EMV and MSD contactless specifications.

16. USEMYSERVICES LAUNCHES NEW CUSTOMIZABLE SAAS REAL-TIME PAYMENT SOLUTIONS
Source: UseMyServices (12/01)

Canadian-based UseMyServices announced the launch of two new fully customizable payment solutions, UseMyBiller and UseMyWidget.

Based on the Software as a Service model (SaaS), UseMyBiller can be completely customized, from the look and feel of the customer's entire checkout experience, to the countries and banks offered. The new service can be easily integrated into existing payment and anti-fraud systems with minimal impact on a company's existing IT resources.

The real advantage of the new payment solution, however, is that it will allow the customer to pay for their purchases using their own online banking service, with the funds then settling directly to the Merchant's own bank account.

"This new payment model has the ability to completely change a company's cash flow management," states UseMyServices founder and CEO, Joseph Iuso. "UseMyBiller merchants receive payments from their customers in the shortest time frame possible, directly into their bank account. For the first time - the merchant is in absolute control of their money, from the beginning to the end of the transaction cycle."

"Success in the global eCommerce marketplace means providing your customers with the widest range of payment solutions possible," said Melody Wigdahl, VP, Global Merchant Services. "Our initial tests included a bank-owned money remittance service and a public utility company - both companies were not only very pleased with the high customer adoption rate of the service, but also with the enhanced cash flow management the new service provides them."

UseMyWidget is the 'lite' version of UseMyBiller, offering slightly less on the customizing side but an even easier integration cycle, and is perfect for the company with limited IT resources.
