Stop - too much information!

Last month SAS Canada & Leger marketing reported that 47% of Canadian executives say they are overwhelmed by information. Note - not overloaded, but "overwhelmed". Wikipedia defines overwhelmed as 1. Buried or drowned beneath a huge mass. 2. Defeated completely.

Let's look at the state of our lives and careers. How many of you check your email every morning before you get out of bed? How many of you get more than 100 emails a day or wish you could get it down to a hundred a day? Is it making you better at your job? Does it make your job easier? Does access to limitless information make your employees more productive than 5 years ago?

Information is the new highly addictive junk food and it is fast food delivered via the internet. We need to go on an information diet. For example, I googled "information overload" and it took only 0.18 seconds to return about 4,780,000 results. Even the word "overwhelmed" produced about 32,700,000 results in 0.07 seconds, so when you ask an employee to research a topic, how much is enough?

In the payment sector we are currently looking at social media - Facebook, Twitter, Youtube. We are enthusiastically looking at ways to exploit these new channels, but here are some questions related to that research and information you might want to ask:

1. How much time are your employees spending on research and how much of that work time is bringing benefit to you?
2. How can you increase the value or decrease the time?
3. How do you know that the research is accurate?

I don't have answers to these questions, but I have a baseline when it comes to the use of social media for any of our businesses- it's all about business. It must drive a clear business benefit. If it isn't - it's a problem. The 'C' level question here is "what's in this for us?"

Social media is a new tool. Defining the ROI, processes, procedures, and even developing the controls and determining how to measure success will take a lot of work. Of course you could google it and you would get about 30,400,000 results in 0.19 seconds.

Here is to good questions, good answers and not being overwhelmed by information! I hope to see you at Cardware 2011 where insights outrank information.

2. GOOGLE, CITI, MASTERCARD, FIRST DATA AND SPRINT TEAM UP TO MAKE YOUR PHONE YOUR WALLET

Google, Citi, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint announced and demonstrated Google Wallet, an app that will make your phone your wallet so you can tap, pay and save money and time while you shop. For businesses, Google Wallet is an opportunity to strengthen customer relationships by offering a faster, easier shopping experience with relevant deals, promotions and loyalty rewards.

Google Wallet is currently in a field test and will be available to consumers this summer. At the event, Google, Citi, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint introduced Google Wallet and invited additional issuing banks, payment networks, mobile carriers, handset manufacturers, point of sale systems companies and merchants to join the initiative.

Next Step in Mobile Payments
At commercial launch, Google Wallet will support payments with two payment solutions: a PayPass eligible Citi MasterCard and a virtual Google Prepaid card. Most people who already have a PayPass eligible Citi MasterCard can simply add it to Google Wallet over the air, using First Data's trusted service manager service. Or, they can fund the Google Prepaid card with any payment card.

Google Wallet uses near field communication (NFC) to make secure payments fast and convenient by simply tapping the phone on any PayPass-enabled terminal at checkout.

Google Wallet is engineered to enable secure payments and goes beyond what's possible with traditional wallets and cards. It will require an app-specific PIN and in the first release, all payment card credentials will be encrypted and stored on a chip, called the secure element that is separate from the Android device memory and is only accessible by authorized programs.

Accepted in Stores Nationwide

Google Wallet is built to work with the fast growing MasterCard PayPass network-a merchant point of sale service that enables consumers to tap to pay. As a result, Google Wallet will immediately be accepted at more than 124,000 PayPass-enabled merchants nationally and more than 311,000 globally.

"MasterCard has pioneered mobile payments with our PayPass technology and we're proud that it is at the heart of Google Wallet," said Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer, MasterCard. "We're excited to partner with these industry leaders today and committed to continuing to play a leadership role in the development of mobile payment technologies."

Google is also working with point of sale systems companies and top retail brands to create a new SingleTap shopping experience. Consumers will be able to pay for an item using a credit card or gift card, redeem promotions and earn loyalty points-all with a single tap of their Google Wallet. Google is working with VeriFone, Hypercom, Ingenico, VIVOTech and others to develop these next generation point of sale systems. Retailers participating in the new SingleTap experience include: American Eagle Outfitters, Bloomingdale's, Champs Sports, The Container Store, Duane Reade, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Foot Locker, Guess, Jamba Juice, Macy's, Noah's Bagels, Peet's Coffee & Tea, RadioShack, Subway, Toys"R"Us and Walgreens.

"Google Wallet allows us to harness the power of mobile technology to enhance our in-store shopping experience and helps bridge the gap between our online and in-store consumer interactions," said Martine Reardon, executive vice-president of marketing and advertising, Macy's. "Macy's is always looking for cutting-edge technology that will deliver value and engage our customers in personal ways. Google Wallet delivers this unique interaction across channels."

The first Google Wallet field tests are focused in New York and San Francisco, where many retailers, Coca-Cola vending machines and even taxis are PayPass-enabled, including major outlets such as CVS, Jack in the Box, Sports Authority and Sunoco. First Data, a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing, is actively recruiting thousands of new merchants in these areas and will soon expand those efforts to deploy more contactless merchant terminals across the country.

Saving Made Simple

Google has also been testing a variety of consumer deals that can range from a 20-percent discount on a new pair of boots discovered on a Google search advertisement; to a $5 off check-in offer received upon entering a store; to a "deal of the day" offering a $20 lunch for $10 at a local restaurant. Whenever you buy or save an offer, you will be able to automatically sync it to Google Wallet.

At most stores you will be able to use Google Wallet to show your offer at the register, where the cashier will either scan it or manually type it in. At participating Google SingleTap merchants, you will be able to pay and redeem an offer with one tap of your mobile device.

Because Google Wallet is a mobile app, it will eventually be able to do more than a regular wallet ever could-but without the bulk. Google Wallet will start with offers, loyalty and gift cards but some day items like receipts, boarding passes and tickets will all be seamlessly synced to your Google Wallet.

Open Commerce Ecosystem = Consumer Choice and Innovation

Google Wallet will work best if it's an open commerce ecosystem so you will be able to carry all the credit cards, offers, loyalty and gift cards you choose-and eventually much more. To this end, Google Wallet will make it possible to integrate numerous types of partners, and Google, Citi, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint invite the banking community, mobile carriers, handset manufacturers, merchants and others to work with Google Wallet.

The first release of Google Wallet is expected to be released on the Nexus S 4G on the Sprint network. Additional devices with NFC capabilities will follow.

3. RIM ANNOUNCES FIRST NFC-ENABLED BLACKBERRYS

Research in Motion, as expected, has announced its first two NFC-enabled BlackBerrys, as it kicks off its BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Fla. The new models, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Bold 9930, which are upgrades to RIM's Bold series, have NFC chips built in, supported by NFC software in RIM's latest BlackBerry 7 operating system. The new models are due to be shipped to world markets starting this summer.

RIM in its announcement today noted that NFC would enable users to easily pair the smartphones with accessories, which would include headsets, and to read information, such as a Web link, by tapping the phones on NFC tags in smart posters.

There was no mention in the press material of using the handsets for NFC-based payment or ticketing. But the NFC chips RIM is using, which NFC Times has reported are supplied by France-based Inside Secure, likely are Inside's SecuRead product. This product combines the chip maker's MicroRead NFC controller with a secure element.

This stacked chip could support payment or other secure applications on this embedded secure element or on a separate NFC-enabled SIM card. RIM has said it would support the single-wire protocol and, therefore, SIM applications, in its NFC-enabled BlackBerrys. But the Canada-based smartphone maker is also known to be interested in using embedded secure chips for applications in its NFC devices.

Update: Among the possible uses by RIM of the chips would be to store employee credentials as part of enterprise security applications. Two other announcements by RIM Monday related to enhanced offers for corporations and government agencies, including a secure multiplatform device management system. RIM also probably wants its own trusted server management service. Research in Motion spokesperson was not available Monday for comment. End update.

The 9900 and 9930 are expected to be the first of several BlackBerrys supporting NFC from RIM, which has said that many, if not most, of its smartphones will support the technology.

RIM hopes NFC and other new features offered by the new Bold models-which the company touts as its thinnest BlackBerry smartphones ever-will help lift the company out of the doldrums.

RIM last week issued a profit warning, notifying investors of weaker than anticipated BlackBerry smartphone sales for the first quarter. The company, however, said it expects "strong revenue growth" in the third and fourth quarters driven by BlackBerry launches and cost savings.

Among the launches will be the NFC-enabled BlackBerry Bold smartphones announced today, which are expected to start shipping in the third quarter. The phones also will sport touch screens to go along with their BlackBerry keyboards, and 1.2 GHz processors

4. VISA UNVEILS NEXT GENERATION ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS AND SERVICES

Visa Inc. announced the next generation of payments solutions that will replicate the ease, reliability and security of Visa point-of-sale payments within traditional and digital eCommerce, mobile commerce and burgeoning social networking commerce environments. New offerings are expected to include a secure cross-channel digital wallet and a range of customized mobile payments services that address the specific requirements of geographic markets around the world.

"Our new solutions deliver greater consumer choice, convenience and control while helping our clients grow their businesses. By helping to reduce abandoned online shopping carts and bringing new account holders into the Visa network, we create a win-win for merchants, consumers and financial institutions," noted Joseph W. Saunders, chairman and chief executive officer of Visa Inc. "In addition, we believe Visa's new payments products and services will help expand financial inclusion to the billions of mobile subscribers today who currently lack access to traditional financial services."

In certain countries with established electronic payments infrastructures, expansive Internet usage and broad mobile network penetration, Visa will be introducing a digital wallet and services platform. The digital wallet will store Visa and non-Visa payments accounts, support NFC payments through the innovative Visa payWave application and deliver a wide range of transaction services to accommodate multiple commerce scenarios-including eCommerce, mobile commerce, micropayments, social networks and person-to-person payments. Visa expects to launch the digital wallet in the U.S. and Canada in fall 2011.

6. ICCSIMTMAT APPROVED BY AMERICAN EXPRESS FOR THE CANADIAN MARKET FOR TERMINAL CERTIFICATION

7. INGENICO PARTNERS WITH GOOGLE TO WORK ON GOOGLE WALLET

Ingenico announced its collaboration with Google on Google Wallet, which allows consumers to use their mobile phones to tap, pay and save. Google announced Google Wallet during its event for partners in New York on May 26. There is nothing more exciting than to see how our mobile payments solution will transform traditional payment terminals from a point of sale to a point of service by enhancing consumer shopping experience," said Philippe Lazare, Chairman and CEO of Ingenico. "It will enable consumers not only pay with their Google Wallet, but also redeem coupons, use gift cards, and earn loyalty points."

With an installed base of over 15 million terminals globally, Ingenico brings three decades of payments expertise to the Google Wallet project. The company is already working with its customers to provide Google Wallet support for their implementation using Ingenico's next generation secure and EMV-enabled Telium series terminals. 8. FRENCH GOVERNMENT TO OFFER UP TO 20 MILLION EUROS IN NFC FUNDING FOR CITIES

The French government has announced it will make up to 20 million (US$28.6 million) available to French cities and other local agencies to assist them in rolling out NFC services.

The money will help large cities and authorities in France to pay for costs to deploy such applications as transit ticketing and parking fare collection, along with other public services, such as controlling access to pubic buildings and schools and tag-reading in museums and at tourist sites. The money will go for a total 20 to 30 projects, and cities apparently can apply for more than one project. They have to declare their intent to apply for the funding by July 1.

The amount of total funding depends on the quality of requests the government receives. The French Ministry for Economy, Finance and Industry and office of the commissioner of general investment are leading in the program.

The French government, in general, has taken an active role in supporting NFC.

For example, �ric Besson, minister of industry, energy and the digital economy, in January announced support for nine cities to pilot NFC, or "Cityzi" services, as the French call it, including Nice, where multiple mobile operators and service providers have been trialing the technology since May of 2010. The new pilot cities include Paris, Marseille and Toulouse, but only Strasbourg and Caen are expected to launch pilots this year.

The pilot cities would likely be frontrunners to receive additional funding out of the possible pot of 20 million.

The government believes France could become a global leader in NFC technology. Several French companies, including Gemalto and Inside Secure, supply NFC technology in France and abroad. The government wants to showcase the French technology internationally.

The Nice project is a "dress rehearsal," for both the technology and business sides of NFC, and now the government hopes to encourage the "widespread deployment of these services," said Besson in a statement. He is the top government official promoting NFC.

French operators were the first telcos to state a goal for distribution of NFC handsets, led by France Telecom-Orange, which late last year said it would sell 500,000 phones by the end of 2011. France's other two major operators, SFR and Bouygues Telecom, later predicted they would also sell a combined 500,000, for a total goal of 1 million NFC handsets sold this year in France.

But with late shipments by handset makers of NFC phones, especially those that support NFC applications on SIM cards-which the French telcos are seeking to buy-it is looking increasingly unlikely the French telcos will hit their goal.

"We will get to those numbers; it's a question of when," Anne Bouverot, executive vice president for mobile services at France Telecom-Orange group, told NFC Times last week.

In addition, France's influence on NFC internationally is waning, with big U.S.-based IT companies, such as Google, and later, Microsoft and perhaps Apple, expected to play a major role in determining how the technology is rolled out.

For its latest initiative, the French government plans to fund projects in metropolitan areas with at least 200,000 residents each.

The funding would not be available to subsidize NFC phones for users or directly to roll out retail payment applications, which involve banks and merchants in the private sector.

The money, for example, could include funds to help pay for equipment, such as transit terminals and tags, along with application development and administrative costs for rolling out bus and train ticketing, parking-fare collection and bicycle and car sharing. The infrastructure could be used by NFC phones and contactless cards.

The money also could include funds for equipment and development of applications for enabling citizens or employees to access public buildings and get information by tapping their phones on tags at monuments and other tourist sites.

9. ACONITE ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF TRANSIT AND MOBILE EMV SOLUTIONS

Aconite's contactless prepaid EMV online and offline capable card issuance solution now powers the recently launched South African multi transit operator integrated public transit network fare card. Plans call for 10 million contactless EMV cards to be issued through the program, over the next three years. The Aconite Prepaid Value Manager was integrated with Traderoot Africa's issuing platform, to provide an end-to-end system that facilitates offline payment authorisation without incurring any credit risk.

Aconite has also announced, along with its partner Proxama, the launch of a Mobile Prepaid EMV card solution. This new mobile platform extends the capability of the Aconite solutions. Customers can use the new range of NFC mobile phones in the same way as contactless chip cards to transact with contactless acceptance devices such as in transit, as well as take advantage of additional mobile applications including loyalty and coupons.

11. STOCKHOLM PUBLIC TRANSPORT DEPLOYS GEMALTO END-TO-END SOLUTION FOR WORLD'S FIRST CUSTOMIZED TRAVEL CARD

Gemalto announces that Stockholm Public Transport is deploying AllAboutMe, a turnkey solution to design customized travel cards online. SL is the public transport operator in Stockholm County with around 700,000 commuters using their services every day. Gemalto is prime contractor for this project and provides SL with a comprehensive card issuance service. SL is the first transport operator in the world to launch a picture card program.

The full-service solution includes online purchase and web plug-in, contactless card production, image verification, secure personalization and printing, as well as delivery to the cardholder. All issuance services are performed in Gemalto's personalization center in Sweden, to ensure commuters receive their card by mail within a few days.

Serverside, part of the Gemalto Group, provided an intuitive software interface that enables users to easily upload a personal photo on SL's website or select a visual from their gallery and then securely order their card online. Commuters can enjoy the convenience of ordering their card from home whenever they want, which means greater comfort and considerable time saving. The new picture card service has had huge success, with a high adoption rate of close to 50% for online buyers, just one month after launch in February 2011.

"Offering our commuters a travel card that is unique to them is an innovative way to provide a more personal level of service," said Lisa Svensson, Contract Manager Card Processing, SL. "Gemalto has been providing SL with contactless travel cards and personalization services for three years and they continue to be our preferred partner for our latest innovation. 12. PRECISE PARKLINK INTRODUCES MASTERCARD PAYPASS TECHNOLOGY

Precise ParkLink Inc., announced a partnership with MasterCard and Moneris Solutions that will make MasterCard's PayPass tap-and-go technology available to its payment terminals across Canada today, including more than 160 parking lots in the Greater Toronto Area.

Peter Groccia, President of Precise ParkLink, welcomes the concept as a way to add speed and efficiency to the operations of his many meters installed across Canada.

The MasterCard PayPass system will be integrated over a three-year period and the contactless payment technology will be included in existing payment terminals, such as parking lots and street meters. Tests of the integrated terminals were completed in January, with public integration already underway.

Moneris Solutions is a key partner in the achievement of the integration. Moneris is Canada's largest provider of payment processing solutions and will be responsible for making the transaction processing available to Precise ParkLink.

13. FIME AND BARNES LAUNCH QUALIFIED MASTERCARD CARD PERSONALISATION VALIDATION TOOL

The first MasterCard qualified test tool that meets its latest card personalisation validation (CPV) requirements has been brought to market by FIME and Barnes International in a joint initiative. The PersevalPRO Issuer test tool allows issuers to accurately and efficiently prepare for the MasterCard CPV certification process. This reduces a product's time to market by eliminating costly and time consuming issues arising during the final certification stage.

FIME - a global leader in integration services for secure chip based applications, tokens and devices, and Barnes International - worldwide chip card test tool developer, have combined expertise to develop the PersevalPRO Issuer test tool. The product incorporates the latest card personalisation functionality and security requirements issued by MasterCard on 25 March 2011, and it is the first to achieve qualification from the payment system.

FIME will use the test tool within its global ISO 17025 accredited laboratories when delivering consulting services for customers requiring MasterCard CPV compliance, by continually evaluating the alignment of a card to these most recently stipulated standards throughout the development process. It will also use PersevalPRO Issuer within its official capacity as an approved MasterCard laboratory to generate the test results required for a product to achieve MasterCard certification.

Banks, card manufacturers and personalisation bureaux are additionally able to purchase and use the tool independently to test a product's adherence to MasterCard standards prior to official certification.

14. A PROMISING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN YESPAY AND TECHRIDER OFFERS AN INTEGRATED EMV PAYMENT SOLUTION TO CANADIAN STORES
