Time for a mid-year update.

China is open for business. Representatives of China Union Pay met with several ACT Canada members last week to discuss business and announced to all Cardware delegates that they are interested in developing new relationships. Frank Xu, Executive Director of the Smart Card Federation of China stated that his organization would be pleased to help companies who wish to enter the Chinese market.

The Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment met with merchants, app developers and the ACT Canada Mobile Strategic Leadership team at Cardware, to better understand the challenges and opportunities present in Ontario's Mobile Payments sector. The question to be answered is whether Ontario can be a global leader in mobile app development. As key payment stakeholders, merchants discussed what they want, and don't want, from m-commerce.

Payment stakeholders are discussing the future of e-wallets because progress has been slower than expected. Mobile payment is also a hot topic, but for a different reason. Stakeholders are now looking at how to move from one issuer, one mobile network operator to any issuer, any MNO. It is expected that the process will take up to 3 years, given the complexity of the business agreements. It was great to hear David Robinson of Rogers talk about the future of m-commerce at Cardware. Although many discussions have been held behind closed doors over the past 5 years, having a large group of issuers, merchants, suppliers and other payment stakeholders in the same room was valuable.

One of the challenges will be in the area of defining agreements with end users. Brigitte Boutin, Deputy Ombudsman for Banking Services at OBSI, provided Cardware delegates with best practices. Delegates also heard from a panel of experts on how to deal with other partnership complexities.

These were just a few of the things that happened at Cardware this year. My thanks to all who participated.

On the government front, the Province of Ontario has budgeted to remove the red and white health cards, mentioned in several auditor general reports as a source of fraud. This could be seen as progress if it were not for the fact that it allows for 5 years to complete the task. Five years is what the government said it would take when they introduced the green cards in 1995. Citizens of British Columbia can be proud of their government which recognized that fraud was an issue and went from outdated cards to the state-of-the-art in 18 months. Ontario is simply talking about replacing red and whites with greens. Why can't we do what BC has done so well?

3. SECUREKEY BRINGS HARDWARE-BASED SECURITY TO MASTERPASS DIGITAL COMMERCE PLATFORM

SecureKey Technologies Inc announced that its briidge.net DNA security software and briidge.net Enterprise authentication service have been integrated with MasterPass, the new digital commerce platform from MasterCard. SecureKey briidge.net DNA combined with Intel Identity Protection Technology (Intel IPT), provides MasterPass wallet holders and merchants with an additional level of hardware-based security to help reduce fraud risk and to help ensure safer, more convenient online payment transactions.

"MasterPass is designed to enable consumers to shop more confidently and safely and has been made even better with the help of SecureKey authentication services and technology using Intel IPT," said Edward Olebe, group head of MasterPass, at MasterCard. "We are delighted that consumers using the MasterPass service can now benefit from the enhanced security and convenience they receive on Intel IPT-enabled devices, such as Ultrabooks."

Intel IPT helps provide a simple, tamper-resistant method for protecting consumer and business data from threats and fraud. As a feature in all Intel-inspired Ultrabook devices and PCs with the latest Intel Core processors, Intel IPT is a key component in enabling hardware-based two-factor authentication solutions for online websites and business log-ins. The combination of briidge.net DNA and Intel IPT is a result of a collaboration SecureKey established with Intel to enable strong authentication solutions for various vertical market applications.

"Intel is excited to be working with MasterCard and SecureKey to bring a new level of hardware-based authentication capabilities based on Intel IPT to MasterPass-connected wallets," said George Thangadurai, general manager of the PC Client Services Division at Intel Corporation. "MasterPass is a perfect example of how Intel IPT working with briidge.net DNA can provide a hardware root of trust that can be utilized by multi-factor authentication solutions for identity protection and transaction verification."

Consumers can link any Intel IPT-enabled device to MasterPass-connected wallets and attain hardware-based security benefits because briidge.net DNA technology is integrated in all Intel IPT-enabled devices.

For select Intel IPT-enabled devices that have near field communication (NFC) capabilities, the SecureKey solution lets the consumer pay for online transactions by simply tapping a MasterCard contactless payment card on their computer. The SecureKey solution reads the contactless bank card and performs the card authentication using the existing issuer payment network over an encrypted channel. This implementation provides equivalent security to a card-present transaction, which over time may significantly reduce the fraud risk for card issuers and lower transaction costs for merchants. The NFC capabilities also eliminate the need for the consumer to manually enter payment and shipping information by allowing consumers to load new cards into MasterPass-connected wallets quickly and easily with a simple tap.

4. AIMIA ANNOUNCES GROUNDBREAKING TRANSFORMATION OF AEROPLAN PROGRAM; SIGNS NEW 10-YEAR FINANCIAL CREDIT CARD AGREEMENT TO COMMENCE IN 2014

Aimia announced groundbreaking changes to the Aeroplan program. The transformation, which is expected to reinforce Aeroplan's position as the leading premium coalition loyalty program in Canada, was announced in conjunction with a framework for an enhanced ten year financial credit card agreement to become effective from January 1, 2014.

"Today's announcement is about launching an outstanding loyalty experience that puts members first and extends Aeroplan's position in the Canadian loyalty market" said Rupert Duchesne , Group Chief Executive of Aimia. "We have built an Aeroplan program that provides high earning members with the rewards and recognition that they deserve and desire, rewarding them for the miles they earn - whether it is with our airline, travel, retail or financial card partners - while maintaining the fantastic core value that benefits all of our members.

A Framework for a Financial Credit Card Partner for the Next Decade Over the last 18 months, Aimia has run a renewal process for Aeroplan's financial card portfolio to define an enhanced partnership aimed at delivering growth over the next decade.

The agreement announced today sets out a framework for an enhanced financial credit card relationship. The provisions of the new agreement will help fund the enhancements to the Aeroplan program being announced today.

TD Bank Group ("TD") will become Aeroplan's new financial credit card partner for the 10-year period effective from January 1, 2014, replacing CIBC, unless CIBC chooses to exercise its contractual right to match the terms of the agreement which expires on or before August 9, 2013. Aeroplan's current agreement with CIBC will continue until December 31, 2013.

Members can continue to earn miles as usual on their CIBC Aerogold co-branded credit cards and take advantage of any Aeroplan promotions related to these cards for the remainder of 2013. Negotiations with

American Express are proceeding in parallel and are ongoing. "We entered into this process with a clear objective - to grow the portfolio with a bank who is committed to building the Aeroplan program with us. The process we have run has confirmed the attractiveness of the Aeroplan portfolio. Under the terms of the new agreement, our financial card partner will contribute to the funding and support required to transform the program and drive increased engagement among premium Canadian consumers," added Duchesne. "Recognizing that more than half of Aeroplan Miles accumulated in 2012 were earned through financial card spend, a successful credit card partnership is an important element of our longer term evolution."

Features of New Credit Card Offerings New Aeroplan co-branded financial credit cards, to be launched in 2014, will provide cardholders with more flexible options, better earn rates and new recognition features; all of which is in addition to the benefits to be added under the Distinction program.

A new enhanced premium card targeted at high net worth Canadian households, with a higher earn rate, will be offered, in addition to premium and mid-market credit cards. The launch of two additional co-branded targeted credit cards is expected to include:
- one aimed at customers travelling frequently between Canada and the United States; and
- a second specifically for Canadian small business owners, which will allow small business owners to choose additional features and benefits specifically designed to their needs.

Both the enhanced premium and premium cards will include a suite of unique Air Canada features and benefits. In a number of instances during 2014, annual fees will be waived and bonus miles awarded to welcome members to the new cards.

5. MASTERCARD MAKES IT EASY FOR CANADIANS TO TRAVEL SMARTER

MasterCard Canada and subsidiary Access Prepaid Worldwide announced the launch of Cash Passport Prepaid MasterCard Currency Card, in time for Canadians travelling locally or abroad this summer. The Cash Passport will change the way you think about your money when travelling. It allows you to pre-load your travel money for safe and convenient use at millions of ATMs, shops and restaurants worldwide. For travellers, prepaid cards are a more secure alternative to the once-popular Travellers Cheque or large sums of cash.

According to a recent study conducted by Leger Marketing on behalf of MasterCard Canada:

Eighty-four per cent of Canadians have travelled within the past 12 months, either for business or leisure.
On average, Canadians are spending $3,915 during their leisure travels outside Canada; a sum of money large enough to create a noticeable bulge in anyone's wallet.

6. COLLIS BRAND TEST TOOL NOW QUALIFIED BY MASTERCARD FOR CONTACTLESS NIV TESTING

UL is pleased to announce that the Collis Brand Test Tool, developed by UL's Transaction Security team, has passed qualification by MasterCard for Contactless Network Interface Validation (NIV) testing.

To correctly process PayPass transactions, acquirers need to validate their network interfaces with MasterCard. NIV testing checks that authorization and clearing interfaces are in accordance with the current MasterCard requirements. NIV Subset 7 ensures that acquirers send correctly formatted PayPass M/Chip authorization requests and successfully process the resulting response messages.

UL Transaction Security has recently implemented the NIV Subset 7 in the Collis Card Simulator, which is an integral part of Collis Brand Test Tool. This new implementation includes two brand new card simulations related to mobile behavior (MCC_420 and MSI_420) to cover the NIV Subset 7.

As a result, the Collis Brand Test Tool is now fully equipped to support acquirers in the full range of terminal and the network interface validations, as it is now qualified for both contact and contactless NIV testing.

This new qualification enables us to provide a complete solution for acquirers to successfully introduce PayPass on their terminals," adds Maxim Dyachenko, Service Line Manager Test Tools at UL transaction security.

Moreover, the Collis Brand Test Tool has the ability to simulate any test card, both contact and contactless. Using card simulation takes away the need for physical cards that can get corrupted or lost. It also provides full insight in the technical details of the communication between the card and the terminal on the one side and between the terminal and the network on the other side. This allows a tester to gain detailed insight in the end-to-end behavior of the system.

Collis, together with RFI Global and Witham Laboratories, was recently rebranded to UL. The Collis test tool portfolio will remain its strong brand and will continue to be further developed and expanded.

7. SOUTH AFRICA SELECTS GEMALTO FOR ITS NATIONAL ELECTRONIC IDENTITY CARD PROGRAM

Gemalto will supply the Government Printing Works (GPW) of South Africa with Sealys eID cards for their national identity program. GPW will harness Gemalto's secure embedded software to protect the holder's image and biometric data within the secure identity e-document, delivering outstanding levels of integrity and privacy. Moreover, GPW selected the high-end Sealys document fitted with the contactless feature, ensuring added levels of convenience with unrivaled security for citizens.

Designed to modernize and replace South Africa's traditional, paper-based 'green book' identity documentation, the new Sealys eID card will be offered by the Department for Home Affairs (DHA) to citizens aged 16 and over. The South African government embarked on this service program to improve confidence in official identity credentials and to prepare for the deployment of a comprehensive suite of efficient and convenient eGovernment services.

Leveraging experience that already includes participation to over 80 national programs worldwide, Gemalto is providing GPW with an advanced and highly durable polycarbonate eID card specifically designed to counter forgery. Furthermore, the Sealy eID supports public key infrastructure (PKI) and match-on-card authentication techniques to enable easy verification of authenticity and a future-proof platform capable of providing a broad range of secure online services such as online and in-person authentication as well as legally binding digital signatures.

8. INSIDE SECURE'S VAULTSECURE SE SUPPORTED BY NBS' TSM

NBS Technologies announced that the VaultSEcure secure element from Inside Secure is now fully supported by NBS' XpressiTrusted Service Manager (TSM). Financial institutions, mobile network operators and service providers can now use the Xpressi Trusted Service Manager to provision mobile secured applications on smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices based on this embedded secure element and securely download cardholder credentials.

Based on the Inside Secure VaultIC architecture, the VaultSEcure secure element allows multiple trusted third parties to independently install and control their own applets in the same device. It comes pre-loaded with a suite of certified branded payment, access control and banking applets. Its Secure Memory Swap technology offers virtually unlimited storage for applet libraries at almost no cost, and a full complement of external interfaces for host connectivity supports all use cases. The VaultSEcure operating system is Java Card 3.0.1 and GlobalPlatform 2.2 compliant (including amendments A, C and D), and can be updated over the air.

9. PAYSMART LAUNCHES EMV SOLUTION IN THE CLOUD USING MULTOS

SMARTCON I paySmart has launched the world's first EMV solution in the Cloud using MULTOS enabling independent issuers the opportunity to migrate from magstripe cards to chip cards in just 30 days.

paySmart's Software as a Service (SaaS) approach to EMV uses cloud computing technology and MULTOS to dramatically reduce the complexity and time required to conduct an EMV migration project, especially for independent EMV issuers.

"Everything is executed under a class 5 datacenter with disaster recovery and redundancy in two separate cities, a mission-critical environment supporting high-volume transactions and the same infrastructure used by major banks, insurance companies and credit cards companies worldwide. 11. VISA EMBRACES GLOBAL MOBILE COMMERCE

Visa has signed agreements with three leading mobile point-of-sale providers to enable merchants of all sizes to accept Visa payments using mobile technology. Early adopters include iZettle, SumUp and SCCP Group's Swiff — all of whom will have their mobile acceptance hardware and software tested and approved for use with Visa payments.

Visa has also approved two new mPOS devices by AnywhereCommerce and Miura Systems to accept Visa payments. The companies aim to displace cash and checks with electronic payments by making it easier for merchants and acquirers in key geographies to deploy secure mobile acceptance terminals.

"The Visa Ready Program is designed to provide innovators with an easy way to collaborate with Visa and gives merchants and consumers the peace-of-mind they need when transacting with a mobile phone," said Jim McCarthy, global head of innovation & strategic partnerships, Visa. 14. FIME BECOMES FIRST LAB TO ACHIEVE EMVCO QUALIFICATION IN NORTH AMERICA

FIME America has become the first laboratory to achieve test bench qualification for EMVCo Contactless Card Level 1 in North America, authorizing the advanced testing provider to offer contactless card level 1 testing services for EMVCo members. The laboratory will service the needs of the United States (U.S.) market, as well as customers based in Canada and Latin America.

EMVCo is the EMV standard body for credit and debit payment cards based on chip card technology. It has an established certification program to confirm products meet the requirements outlined in the EMV Specifications. This promotes increased levels of confidence that EMV products will perform as intended and ensure interoperability between payment devices.

"With EMV Contactless being mandated by major payment schemes and the U.S. working towards its EMV migration deadlines, it is vital that on-the-ground EMV testing and certification can be offered," explains Xavier Giandominici, Director at FIME America. 15. IN A FIRST, CITY OF OAKLAND ISSUES AN ID THAT DOUBLES AS A DEBIT CARD

Ever thought you could use your government-issued ID to buy a cup of coffee? It seems like those days may not be far off now that the City of Oakland has issued a city ID card that is also a prepaid MasterCard debit card.

The card came about because Oakland — as well as other cities that have yet to release the cards — wanted to issue IDs for nondrivers that used city services. The card allows the city to issue funds to the citizens cheaply and easily. There are no checks in the mail and no check-cashing fees to pay out.

Such cards have been issued for college IDs before, but not for municipal IDs, as far as Bank Innovation could discover.

Oakland approached sourcing experts at SF Global for ideas. SF Global sent them to prepaid card issuer Praxell, which in turn partnered with Arroweye Solutions, a maker of customized payment cards. Arroweye's technology allows for secure and highly personalized cards to be produced affordably on demand.

"Certain companies specialize in creating ID cards," said Arroweye CEO Render Dahiya. "These usually consist of preprinted shells and a photo or signature are added on site to produce a laminated card, as at the DMV." But these types of cards cannot be used as payment vehicles.

The card is a simple magstripe swipe card, but more sophisticated options, such as EMV and NFC-enabled cards, may be on the horizon. Certainly Arroweye is ready to go with these types of cards, but they are considerably more expensive to produce, according to the company.

"As services get more automated and more driven by your identity, and more cities are offering services," Dahiya said, "more of these cards will be needed." The cards are expected to particularly benefit to financially underserved communities, members of which have difficulty accessing traditional banking products.

Oakland ordered its first cards in May 2013.

With federal and state governments increasingly mired in partisan battles that prevent innovation, it is falling to cities to provide novel services. The bipartisan Brookings Institution recently released a book called The Metropolitan Revolution that gets at this issue. As Jennifer Bradley, one of the book's authors, said to an interviewer last night, sometimes innovation means "getting stuff done."

16. THE GOOGLE WALLET NEWS THAT WASN'T

Two Years And Five Insights Later...

Let's face it, the only news that broke last week when Business Week published its story about Google Wallet was that it had been downloaded around 10 million times since it's launch two years ago. Frankly, that was about 9,950,000 more times than I actually thought it had been downloaded given the lack of physical merchant acceptance and handset availability (so, I'd love to know how many of those downloads were to make purchases in the Google's app store.) The reorg of Google Wallet of two months ago was really the big news – and the public evidence that Google Wallet, as it was originally designed was a total bust. You can read my take on that reorg when it was announced here.

There are many reasons why Google's Wallet whiffed and why even its pivot away from NFC to the cloud wasn't enough to turn things around. The very cause celebre of Google as a company - data that could be turned into advertising - gave merchants the heebie-jeebies. Osama Bedier, Google Wallet's lead guy, put it right out there when he said that Google was a-okay about losing money on every payments transaction, since it's focus was to "collect data on consumer habits and target ads to them." It may be that the business model of tomorrow in payments is related in some way to advertising or promotional revenues. But merchants didn't really cozy up to the idea that signing on to accept Google Wallet meant that their customer data could be served up for their competitors and everyone else in the world to monetize. Even Bedier's Money 2020 keynote assurances to the merchant community didn't seem to help. Admittedly, that's a tough story to sell when something like 95 percent of the company's revenue comes from monetizing data.

So, I say let's give Larry Page some credit for taking a bunch of steps back in payments and doing things like scrapping the Google credit card and any plans to enter the very, very crowded mobile point of sale space with its own branded reader. Both would have been throwing good money after bad - where the bad money was estimated to be about $300M already.

Looking ahead though, I see one of three options for Google and payments – and they are at very different ends of the spectrum.

Option One. Google Wallet remains an enabling payment method for Google Play and pretty much nothing more. That would make it really easy for people with Android devices – and that is the predominant operating system now worldwide – to buy apps. The big obstacle to overcome, though, is how to juice apps revenues, which is where Apple outperforms Android by a country mile – like nearly 5 times. Statistics published by Distimo at the end of May (which is the #1 source for tracking app applications and installs/downloads) show that daily revenue from the top 200 apps in the Apple App store was $5.1 million, compared to $1.1 million in Google Play. Since developers get paid every time an app is downloaded, to make Google Wallet's revenue's register (pun intended), it has to get more people to download more of those apps – which will incent more developers to write more of those apps which will bring in more people who want to download them - the virtuous circle in action! Google has to solve the fragmentation issue first since it is difficult for developers now to reach large numbers of users with a single instance of their app. Published reports suggest that as of May of 2013, more than 97 percent of Android users are on older versions of the operating system – writing an app to its most recent version would reach only a smidge more than 2 percent of Android devices in use. Google has said that it will solve the fragmentation issue -since it certainly does impact more than Google Wallet revenue - but if it does, a Google Wallet/Play combo will make it easier for more people to easily buy more digital goods.

Option Two. Make Google Wallet a defacto mobile money platform for developing countries. Until Apple releases a cheaper handset, Android has the market for cheap smartphones locked and loaded. Making it easy for smartphone users to activate a preloaded Google Wallet would seed the developing market with millions and millions of Wallet customers, in an environment where the tension over payments plus data for serving offers might not be as acute. This initiative could dovetail nicely with other Google initiatives too, like its initiatives to bring broadband to underdeveloped countries. Now, the downside here is that the revenue delivered would be more like a rounding error than a real money maker, but twenty years from now, probably sooner than we have driverless cars, these developing countries could be pretty well developed and start kicking in some real revenue.

Option Three. Stick to your day job and bag the idea of a digital wallet entirely. If the Google Wallet game was never about payments (not a core competency) but data (a real core competency) then just double down on that and forget trying to duke it out on the traditional payments battlefield. The real battlefield, just ask anyone in payments, is now data. And, there's a treasure trove of revenue possibilities in mashing up transaction data with other data sources like location based, behavioral based, preference based data (to name but a few) that would enable payments providers and merchants and others in the ecosystem to create new business models and new customer and sales opportunities. If Google weren't in the payments business, my guess is that being some sort of enabling data platform to the payments ecosystem would meet less resistance by everyone since it wouldn't be coming from someone who was operating in payments directly and who obviously had an ulterior motive for being there.

If I were a betting woman, I would put it all on red that Google will pursue Option One – and try to expand outside of Play. That seems a shame and a real distraction. I'm not sure what would make them think that the next two or three or five years will be any different from the last seven years of trying to ignite a Google-branded payments platform (remember, before Google Wallet, there was Google Checkout which launched in June 2006).

If I were an exec at Google, I would plead my case for Option Three - and try to figure out what that might look like. It could be every bit as disruptive as they intended Google Wallet to be, without the road kill within Google or from merchants or payments providers. One could argue that the piece of the ecosystem that needs serious overhaul is the highly fragmented and inefficient part that is trying to reinvent the commerce experience for merchants and consumers. And, since consumers increasingly use their smartphones as part of the commerce discovery opportunity, and Google has the market cornered on the biggest discovery channel ever - search - it seems like there could be something of value to explore.

Since they say that three times is the charm, I guess we'll have to wait and see what Google payments 3.0 becomes. Any bets from any of you on what option they are likely to pursue?


17. GEMALTO DELIVERS MICRO-BANKING TECHNOLOGY IN BANGLADESH

Gemalto is providing its smart card based solution to Dipon Consultancy Services Limited (DCSL) for their financial inclusion project in Bangladesh. DCSL is implementing this project in collaboration with Prime Bank Limited (PBL). The program named Prime Cash which represents over 76% of the country's 150 million-population aims to provide secure access to banking services for people with limited or no access to banking services in both rural and urban areas in Bangladesh.

In its effort to foster financial inclusion, DCSL has deployed DG-ePay (Dipon Group-ePay) Service Points at major public places throughout the country. End users can enroll themselves and open an account at any of the DG-ePay Service Points. The Gemalto smart cards contain an embedded software application that securely stores the holder's facial image and fingerprint data captured upon enrollment. End user transactions are validated using biometric authentication, providing a superior level of convenience and security to all, including illiterate users. The Gemalto solution facilitates daily life financial services, such as account opening, deposit, withdrawal, transfer, loan repayment and remittances. DCSL has already delivered 200,000 cards to end users.

"Gemalto's solution is the perfect fit for our market, where the literacy rate is less than 60%(2), enabling users to authenticate themselves in a fast, intuitive and highly secure manner," said Syed Javed Iqbal, Director, Dipon Consultancy Services. "We believe Gemalto's smart card technology will go a long way in the spread of financial services to the remote corners of our country, contributing to enhancing the Digital Bangladesh campaign."

18. CHINA MOBILE AND CHINA UNIONPAY LAUNCH NFC PAYMENTS SERVICE

China Mobile and Chinese bank card association China UnionPay have announced that their NFC payments service is now live in more than fourteen Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou—and eight banks have signed up to make use of the partners' platform.

To use the service, China Mobile subscribers need to acquire an NFC SIM card, available at the carrier's stores, and download the network's newly released mobile wallet app, which is available for Android devices. After linking a bank account to the wallet, the customer is free to make mobile payments at participating merchants equipped with UnionPay QuickPass contactless POS terminals.

Eight banks have already joined the platform, including some of the country's largest such as Bank of China, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank and China CITIC Bank. More are expected to sign up to the service, which uses China UnionPay's trusted service management (TSM) platform which is fully integrated with that of China Mobile.

Other banks connected to the platform so far include China Everbright Bank, China Minsheng Banking Corp, GF Securities, Bank of Shanghai and Bank of Beijing.


19. APPLE FILES PATENT FOR DIGITAL WALLET

In case the current digital wallet market wasn't saturated enough, another major player may soon throw its hat into the ring.

Apple applied for a patent for a "method and system for managing credits via a mobile device" yesterday, as VentureBeat reported. And if you name payments buzzwords – whether their mobile or digital wallet, virtual currency, NFC or otherwise – odds are they pertain to Apple's patent.

Oh, and did we mention a potential ability to make money by viewing adds, too? This patent is jam-packed with payments goodies.

A basic breakdown of what the patent implies is that Apple is designing a way for you to walk into a store and make a transaction via phone: hardly a revolutionary concept.

What's more interesting, though, is that Apple mentions (although doesn't require) NFC as a possible means for this transaction to occur: something they've been set against in the past.

Exactly how this platform would work with Passbook, which has not yet truly been used as the mobile wallet precursor many expected, is unclear. But of note is an intriguing system of services that result in receiving "tokens" or coupons, including the potential ability to watch ads for such rewards. As VentureBeat notes, such coupons or tokens could potentially be highly specific, allowing users to redeem them only for certain products or services, at certain locations or at certain times.

"The present invention is directed at least in part to a method and system for providing credits, vouchers or coupons representative of monetary value to users of mobile devices such as mobile telephones," the patent reads. "The users of the mobile telephones are able to use the monetary value of the credits to purchase goods and/or services at e.g. point of sale terminals and the like."

In addition to being transmitted to an actual point of sale system, credits would also be transferable via text message or over the web.

We should reiterate that this is just a patent, and a conservative estimate has Apple applying for 543-or-so patents a day. But it's an interesting glimpse at the potential future of mPayments nonetheless.

22. PCS LAUNCHES BREADCARD PREPAID CORPORATE MASTERCARD FOR THE UK SCRAP METAL INDUSTRY POWERED BY CARTA PREPAID PLATFORM

To meet with the new UK Home Office guidelines regarding the banning of cash to pay for scrap metal, PCS offers UK based scrap metal dealers a fast, convenient and compliant way to pay customers for scrap metal using a fully verified prepaid MasterCard card. The system provides a full electronic audit trail of funds and PCS carries out independent verification of customers' identity within seconds to allow a customer to be issued with a funded card in seconds. 23. INSIDE SECURE AND CPI CARD GROUP ANNOUNCE AVAILABILITY OF MASTERCARD M/CHIP ADVANCE IN THE US

INSIDE Secure and CPI Card Group announced that two new jointly developed M/Chip Advance EMV card products have been approved by MasterCard. The two products offer capabilities specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of the U.S. market. In support of issuers wishing to use these products, Datacard Group is offering complete turnkey hardware and software personalization solutions, as well as personalization scripts.

EMV is a standard for globally interoperable secure payments, and its coming deployment in the U.S. represents a significant move towards an enhanced payment ecosystem.

"Our well proven secure microcontroller module at the heart of thesenew EMV products from CPI marks INSIDE's entry into the U.S.EMV payment market," said Bernard Vian, executive vice president for the Secure Payment Division at INSIDE Secure. 24. ING DIRECT LAUNCHES REMOTE CHEQUE DEPOSIT

Banking at ING DIRECT just got more simple and convenient. Beginning today, clients can deposit cheques into their accounts remotely using Cheque-In, a new feature of the bank's existing mobile app. Cheque-In allows clients to take a picture of their cheque using their mobile device and have it deposited immediately into their ING DIRECT account. The feature is the first available on all major platforms, including Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android Phone, Android Tablet, BlackBerry Mobile devices with BB10 OS and tablets running Windows 8.

"One of our commitments to Canadians is to make banking safe, simple and convenient to fit today's lifestyles," said Peter Aceto, president and CEO at ING DIRECT. "With Cheque-In, Canadians can deposit cheques quickly and securely using their smartphones, which are such a central part of our lives. This means we can now deposit a cheque as soon as we receive it, without the hassle of going to a bank branch or ABM, and our money can start earning interest right away. This is a huge step forward for consumers, banks and the payments industry."

According to the Canadian Payments Association (CPA), Canadian businesses and consumers write close to four million cheques on average every business day. Each cheque is physically handled multiple times as it moves throughout the clearing and settlement system.

"Modernizing Canada's payments system is a key focus for the Canadian Payments Association," said Gerry Gaetz, the CPA's CEO. "We are facilitating the use of image technology to make the cheque clearing process more efficient. Using the CPA's comprehensive legal and operational framework for imaging, Canadian financial institutions can now develop and offer new image-based products and services, such as remote deposit capture, to their customers," added Mr. Gaetz.

The U.S. began clearing cheques electronically in 2004. According to the U.S. Federal Reserve, practically all of the 25 billion cheques deposited in the U.S. each year are now cleared electronically. In 2010, electronic collection and presentment of cheques resulted in annual savings of approximately three billion dollars for financial institutions, businesses and consumers in the U.S.

The practicality of remote deposit capture is what makes it so appealing for consumers and banks alike. The technology used by ING DIRECT, developed in Waterloo, Ontario in part by NCR Corporation, meets the needs of banks looking to modernize operations and services, as well as consumers who are looking for choice and flexibility.

"Remote deposit capture is one of those rare opportunities that simultaneously deliver an improved customer experience, increased convenience and productivity improvements to the Canadian economy," said Steve Nogalo, vice president and general manager of Payments and Multichannel, NCR Corporation. "For ING DIRECT's clients, Cheque-In is a clear win. They will be able to make their deposits from the comfort of their own home or while on the run. To use Cheque-In, clients need to log in to the ING DIRECT mobile app on their mobile device and take a picture of both the front and back of their cheque. The client will then select which account they would like to deposit the funds to and enter the full amount written on the cheque before confirming the deposit. The funds are immediately deposited into the client's account and are subject to the client's normal hold policy limits.

A recent survey by ING DIRECT found that over half of Canadians (55 per cent) deposit at least one cheque per month o their bank account, either by depositing it in an ABM (71 per cent), bringing it to a branch (41 per cent) or mailing it to their bank (1 per cent). Over a third of Canadians (38 per cent) are open to doing more traditional banking functions using their smartphone; this number jumps to 57 per cent when looking at 18 to 34 year olds exclusively.

25. VERIFONE AND LENOVO TO DELIVER WINDOWS-BASED MOBILE POINT-OF-SALE PLATFORM

VeriFone Systems, Inc. and Lenovo announced that they have joined forces to offer a versatile, enterprise-class, mobile point of sale (mPOS) platform. Powered by Windows 8 Pro, it easily integrates with existing retail store systems.

The mPOS platform integrates a ThinkPad Tablet 2 based on the Intel Atom Z2760 processor with VeriFone's secure PAYware Mobile technology designed exclusively for the Lenovo tablet. The integrated device is based on the Microsoft Windows 8 Pro operating system and will enable retailers to easily transition to an mPOS platform that works with their existing business infrastructure and operations including multichannel management, store operations, e-commerce, merchandising, financials, and supply chain management.

26. WWPASS CORP. UNVEILS SECURITY PACK VERSION 2.3

27. NETS AND INGENICO INTRODUCE MOBILE PAYMENT SECURE SOLUTIONS (MPOS) FOR SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS

Ingenico has entered into an agreement with Nets which enables Nets to launch new payment solutions for small merchants. The new mobile Point Of Sale (mPOS) solution from Nets turns smartphones and tablets into secure payment terminals.

Nets, in partnership with Ingenico, will provide a fully operated solution from the secured card reader to the processing of the transaction. Nets will use the mobile commerce platform provider ROAM, an Ingenico subsidiary and leading mobile commerce platform provider, to implement the solution.

Nets will offer a dedicated application and a secured pocket format card reader with Bluetooth connection to use with a smartphone or a tablet device.

The iCMP, a pocket-sized and light weight payment device from Ingenico, meets all security and payments standards, including EMV, PCI PTS, Paypass and PayWave. This new payment solution will be rolled out before end of 2013, with a pilot taking place in Norway during the Autumn.

28. GEMALTO ENABLES EMV PAYMENT FOR TELEFONICA-MASTERCARD JOINT VENTURE IN BRAZIL

Gemalto announces that it will supply prepaid EMV payment cards to Mobile Financial Services (MFS), the joint venture formed by Telefonica and MasterCard Worldwide. The launch is part of "Zuum", a new payment service offered by Telefonica's Vivo brand which aims to provide financial inclusion for the unbanked population of Brazil. Gemalto will also provide MFS with all the personalization services associated with EMV prepaid cards as well as tamper evident packaging and fulfillment to point-of-sale. With Vivo's huge coverage of over 90% of the Brazilian population, the service offers widespread accessibility for the vast majority of consumers.

Nearly 40 percent of Brazilians currently do not use banking services(1). With "Zuum", Telefonica's Vivo customers will be able to set up a pre-paid account which can be accessed either through their mobile phone or a regular prepaid EMV MasterCard payment card, provided by Gemalto. "Zuum" will allow people to make secure, convenient financial transactions including peer-to-peer money transfers, merchant purchases, ATM cash withdrawal, bill payment, airtime top-ups and more. Cash can be transferred easily at mobile phone refill stations, supermarkets and newspaper stands. The physical card provided by Gemalto can be used to make purchases in Brazil at over 1.8 million EMV-enabled merchants and to withdraw money in ATMs.

"We relied on Gemalto to help us quickly launch the first of several innovative solutions that will allow mobile subscribers with or without bank accounts to make secure payment and money transfers conveniently with pre-paid m-payment services," said Marcos Etchegoyen, president of MFS. 29. COLLIS BRAND TEST TOOL INTEGRATES WITH VISA CCRT TOOL

UL is pleased to announce that the Collis Brand Test Tool, developed by UL's transaction security team, has improved its support for Visa Acquirer Device Validation Toolkit (ADVT) testing. The Collis BTT is now integrated with the Visa Chip Compliance Reporting Tool (CCRT), meaning that it automates the uploading of the test results to the Visa CCRT and it obtained qualification for motorized readers.

Testers may upload most of their test details to the Visa CCRT using an XML structure. Therefore, the new release of the Collis Brand Test Tool supports the export of an XML file for this purpose. This file can be uploaded in the CCRT, which improves the administrative part of the test process considerably. The solution works for both contact and contactless ADVT testing.

Moreover, as terminals with motorized readers became smarter in detecting possible fraud, it became more and more difficult to let them accept a wired probe during testing. For that reason, the Collis Brand Test Tool was upgraded to work with programmable cards for motorized readers. This solution is now qualified to be used in formal ADVT testing.

"UL continues to develop high quality test tools for the payment market by improving and expanding its Collis Test Tool portfolio. We have integrated our Collis Brand Test Tool into terminal testing processes from all schemes. Now, we made some steps with respect to Visa, and we are happy to offer better integration with their process, and also more convenience in testing any Visa-branded devices, including ATMs," adds Maxim Dyachenko, Service Line Manager Test Tools at UL transaction security.

Collis was recently rebranded to UL and together with RFI Global and Witham Laboratories forms UL transaction security. The Collis test tool portfolio will remain its strong brand and will continue to be further developed and expanded.
