1. EDITORIAL COMMENT
Source: Catherine Johnston, President & CEO, ACT Canada (11/28)
A World of Experience
Every few years a new expression emerges into the business world. "Think globally and act locally" is one relevant to our Canadian marketplace. We are not on the bleeding edge of EMV or secure ID, so we can benefit from the experiences of those who preceeded us. The trick is to find the right source for information.

Three years ago ACT Canada joined with other associations from around the world to help source that data for our members. We formed the International Smart Card Associations Network (ISCAN) and I am pleased to announce that at our recent meeting at Cartes we took a number of steps to help you find the information you need to protect your investments.

WWW.ISCAN.CA, our new web site, will lead you to data from Australia, China, Europe, France, India, the United States and, of course, Canada. If you want to know how many cards were shipped last year by sector, ISCAN will take you to Eurosmart, who track that data. Whitepapers and privacy design tools will be available from the Smart Card Alliance and ACT Canada. As the site grows over the coming months much more information will be available. Visit us in January!

To find out where the world's best conferences are being held and to see their programs - visit the site. You'll be able to meet and talk with ISCAN members at CTST and Cartes and get the latest updates on the news from each region.

ISCAN also moved to hold elections every 18 months to provide leadership continuity and ensure that elections are held alternatively in Europe and North America. Philippe Delanoue of AFPC is the current
Vice Chairman and I am pleased to serve as Chairman.

ISCAN will help you think globally: ACT Canada will help you act locally.

This is our last ACTion e-news for 2005. On behalf of Andrea McMullen and myself, we wish you a happy, healthy holiday season and our very best wishes for a wonderful 2006.
2. VISA RELEASES CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS SPECIFICATION
Source: Contactless News (11/23)
To guarantee that Visa contactless cards can be used throughout the world, the credit card giant recently issued new contactless payment specs that provide additional security options and enhanced performance for faster transaction processing.

Visa International released a global contactless payments specification that will ensure Visa cardholders can use their contactless cards worldwide while still providing issuers with the flexibility to customize programs to meet local market needs. The specification provides additional security options and enhanced performance for faster transaction processing.

The new framework is compatible with existing Visa contactless card programs in the market and in development. Cards can use magnetic stripe functionality or follow the more enhanced chip or smart card functionality enabled by the global EMV standard. The specification supports all payment platforms - credit, debit and prepaid.

Visa updated the specification to provide an effective roadmap for financial institutions and vendors to move to interoperable programs. The specification provides flexibility by allowing issuers to choose the options and features that best meet their local market needs while ensuring global interoperability. It also provides enhanced security options to enable greater card and data protection.

Another major feature of the specification is that communications between the card and terminal have been streamlined to provide faster transaction processing. This makes contactless ideal for both low-value environments where speed is of the essence, such as parking garages, quick service restaurants, and convenience stores, and high-value environments where the use of PIN or signature still offers convenience and customer security.

3. AXALTO UNVEILS IN-BANK CUSTOMISED EMV CARDS
Source: Axalto via the Wise Marketer (11/18)
The chip card provider Axalto has launched Instant Issuance, a secure end-to-end solution that allows banks to immediately issue personalised EMV smart cards within their branches, with a design customised on request. In other words, not only can banking customers get their new smart card on the spot but they can also have a personal picture added to it and choose their card body and PIN code at the same time. It is expected that this service will contribute to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty because the cards are more personal and are delivered more quickly than the usual several-day processing and postage period.

In other news, Axalto won the "Best ID Application of the Year", the "Best Hardware of the Year" and the "Best IT Security Application of the Year" (in partnership with STMicroelectronics) awards at the smart card industry's Cartes exhibition, demonstrating its leadership in smart card innovation.

4. ADVT TESTING - EXCEPTIONAL VALUE ON COMPLETE SOLUTION WITH RAPID DISPATCH, EASE OF UPDATE & POWERFUL ANALYSIS
Source: ICC Solutions (11/15)

9. CANADIANS ASK FOR FASTER & BETTER LOYALTY REWARDS
Source: Canadian Marketing Association (11/21)
Canadian consumers are asking for faster and better customer loyalty programme rewards, according to a recent study by the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA). Tangibility of rewards seems to have been a dominant theme. More than one-third (34%) of consumers said that the time it takes to accumulate enough points to redeem is a major influencer when choosing a rewards programme (and consequently choosing the retailer they need to use). Almost the same number (35%) rated the variety of products and services offered as part of the reward package as being important. Overall, nearly three-quarters (72%) claim to be enrolled in at least one loyalty programme, with an average enrolment of 2.2 programmes per person. The Making and Breaking Loyalty study was based on 1,000 telephone interviews with Canadian consumers, carried out by Toronto-based Logit Group.
10. FIRST PREPAID VISA GIFT CARDS INTRODUCED IN CANADA
Source: Vancity (11/15)
Tapping a $2.4 billion industry, prepaid VISA cards are now available in Canada with the launch of a series of gift cards by a Vancouver-based credit union and its national subsidiary.

Accepted at any merchant in the world that takes VISA cards electronically, all the cards offer the convenience of a traditional gift card without the restrictions on where they can be redeemed, making them the only VISA gift cards available in Canada to offer this flexibility.

Most cards can be loaded for any amount ranging from $25 to $500. If lost they can be replaced. Online purchases are allowed and purchases can be made in any currency and will be converted to Canadian dollars just like a regular credit card transaction.

A first in Canada, research shows gift card market potential in Canada to be worth $2.4 billion. In British Columbia alone the market is estimated to be worth approximately $400 million and expected to grow 20 per cent to $690 million by 2008.

16. KIOSK INDUSTRY TO GROW BY 20 %
Source: Kioskcom.com (11/25)
The global kiosk industry is predicted to see a 20 per cent annual growth to 2007 as businesses and retailers shift routine service to self-checkouts, photo-processing and bill payment kiosks. Retail is the largest kiosk sector, with 46 per cent of combined shipments in North America and Europe and a 20.4 per cent annual growth rate, according to research firm Venture Development Corporation (VDC). Hospitality will account for 18.2 per cent of annual kiosk industry growth through 2007, VDC predicts, with healthcare at 14.0 per cent and government at 16.2 per cent.

Regarding new kiosk applications, self-service ordering and payments at quick-serve restaurants (QSRs) and in-store music downloads at retailers are identified as the next major markets. Major QSRs such as McDonalds', Burger King and Subway are testing kiosk-based ordering with a view to wider rollout during 2006, which is fueling industry speculation about future market growth. In a separate initiative, Wal-Mart is said to be looking into letting customers use kiosks to download movies onto DVDs for purchase, similar to its pilots of in-store music downloads of songs to CDs.

Elsewhere in the retail industry, Target Corp and Best Buy are rumored to be assessing the business case for using kiosks to download movies onto DVDs in a similar move to Wal-Mart's. Kiosk deployments in North America represent an estimated USD 680 million market, VDC notes, with over 265,000 units shipped a year, or 50 to 55 per cent of the global total. Europe represents a slightly different market in that advanced payment options, product innovation and functionality are offered by a greater number of smaller players who tend to customize for their clients' needs.
