1. EDITORIAL COMMENT
Source: Catherine Johnston, President &
CEO, ACT Canada (04/29) |
|
|
 |
 |
Let's celebrate
Does that invitation
surprise you? Do
you
think that in these
times of fiscal restraint
there is nothing
to celebrate? I believe
that not only should
we come together
to
do this, we must.
Here's my rationale.
It helps to remember
that there are cycles
of prosperity and
lean times. Others
have
survived what we
are going through
and actually
have done remarkable
work under those
difficult
circumstances. Recognizing
them is motivating
for all of us. I
hope you will join
us June
18th as we honour
20 years of achievement
at our awards luncheon
at Cardware 09.
There is a second
reason to have a
party.
When times are tough,
you need friends.
We
all work so hard,
that it is increasingly
difficult to make
time to socialize
with
our peers. And yet,
these are the people
who we need in our
corner. Those busy
schedules
mean that people
have less time to
respond
to our emails and
phone calls, so staying
close is really important.
So, I hope you will
join us June 17th
for
our 2nd annual Cardware
party. Be warned
- there is a dress
code. Jeans! Hair:
be
prepared to let it
down. Agenda: nothing
but fun.
The third reason
is that we are celebrating
our 20th (and we
look great for our
age!)
If you can't join
us at Cardware for
these
two wonderful events,
I hope you will find
a way to celebrate!

2. MASTERCARD CANADA, CITI CARDS CANADA AND
BELL MOBILITY COMPLETE MOBILE PAYMENT TRIAL
Source: Canada Newswire (04/16)
|
 |
 |
MasterCard Canada, in partnership with Citi
Cards Canada and Bell Mobility, has completed
the first near-field communications (NFC)
trial of Mobile PayPass(TM) in Canada. This
was the first trial in Canada to use Bell
Mobility's wireless network allowing trial
participants to make purchases using their
mobile device at MasterCard(R) PayPass(TM)
acceptance locations across Canada. The four-month
closed trial was a major step towards bringing
mobile payments to Canadian mobile phone
users.
"This mobile payment
trial is one of
the latest in a series
of MasterCard global
payment trials," says
Scott Lapstra,
Vice President, Market
Development, MasterCard
Canada. "The completion
of this trial
provides us with Canadian-specific
data that
will help prepare for the
potential roll-out
of mobile payment services
in the future."
"As one of the first
issuers to offer
PayPass-enabled cards in
Canada, we have
always worked with MasterCard
to find new,
convenient payment solutions
for consumers,"
says Richard McLaughlin,
Chief Marketing
Officer, Citi Cards Canada.
"We believe
that mobile payment has
strong potential
to become part of Canada's
future payment
landscape."
About the trial
The trial took place at
Bell Mobility's Creekbank
office in Ontario and approximately
75 employees
from Bell, Citi Cards and
MasterCard participated.
Trial participants proved
that mobile payments
are easy, fast and secure.
The average transaction
amount during the trial
was just under $20,
which is ideal for merchants
in high-volume,
small-ticket purchase businesses.

8. EMV FOR UK ID CARDS?
Source: SecureID News (04/16) |
|
|
 |
 |
The United Kingdom is considering adding
EMV functionality to its ID cards, according
to ZDNet UK. EMV is used in UK payment cards
to protect against fraud and some say it
can be useful while others say it's not secure
enough.
With chip-and-PIN cardholders could access
government and private-sector services online
using the PIN to verify their identity. Business
too could take advantage of such functionality
and have individuals authenticate using a
PIN. Using EMV could also cut the cost of
the system since it's already a widespread
standard.
But some say PIN is not secure enough. Cambridge
University security researcher Richard Clayton
said that PIN functionality could open up
new avenues for fraudsters. Fraudsters could
set up fake government sites in order to
phish for PINS, similar to what criminals
do with banking Web sites now.

13. NETS INTRODUCES SINGAPORE'S MOST INNOVATIVE
CONTACTLESS DEBIT CARD FOR TRANSIT, ERP,
CAR PARK PAYMENTS AND RETAIL PURCHASES
Source: More RFID (04/17)
|
 |
 |
Singapore's leading electronic payments provider
NETS announced the ultimate card for consumers
in Singapore. Together with Singapore's leading
local banks, DBS, Oversea Chinese Banking
Corporation (OCBC) and United Overseas Bank
(UOB), NETS will be rolling out a card that
combines the functions of a debit card and
NETS CashCard.
This allows customers to use just one card
for their cashless payment needs from the
time they leave their homes - to pay for
road tolls, for public transport, for shopping,
for bill payments, for car park fees and
even for a good car wash.
One of the unique features of the card is
that consumers can do a top up anywhere anytime
when performing a transaction. What this
means is that when the stored value of the
NETS CashCard component is below the minimum
amount, at the time of making a payment using
this card, a top up alert is triggered on
the terminal as well. Consumers can do a
top up at that retail point. The top up will
be direct from the customer's debit account.
Hence, customers can enjoy the ultimate convenience
of always having enough money for all their
everyday needs.
Today, NETS has more than 35,000 acceptance
points throughout the whole of Singapore.
It strives to achieve a near 100% acceptance
as a result of offering this solution for
small value payments.
UOB is targeting to roll out the card at
the time of launch in fourth quarter of this
year.
