|
| Data Capture |
The electronic recording of information for subsequent use and
information processing for clearing payment transactions. |
|
| Data Encryption Algorithm |
A cryptographic algorithm for encrypting data that is an ANSI
standard. The algorithm is a key driven and reversible process.
Also referred to as the Data Encryption Standard (DES). |
|
| Data Encryption Standard |
Federal Information Processing Standard publication 46. A US
standard defining a cryptosystem for use by the US Federal Government.
Popularly known as DES, this cryptosystem is widely used in payment
systems, |
|
| Data Tag |
A plastic tag that contains a chip and functions as a military
dog tag or identification device. |
|
| Data Transfer |
Conveyance of data by any means. |
|
| Database |
A collection of records stored electronically. |
|
| Debit Card |
A card used to make transactions that is linked to the cardholder’s
direct deposit account. |
|
| Debug |
Eliminate errors from hardware or software. |
|
| Decipherment |
See decryption |
|
| Decryption |
Converting encrypted information back into clear text. |
|
| Decrementing Value Card |
See prepaid card |
|
| Dedicated Network |
A communications facility established for a specific purpose,
such as servicing point-of-sale facilities. |
|
| Default Settings |
Standing instructions to configure a commuter at log on, establishing
baud rate, lines per screen, characters per line and other parameters. |
|
| Deferred Debit Card |
Something half way between a debit card and a charge card. The
cardholder settles his entire balance for every billing period,
but there is a delay between the date when a transaction is charged
to his account and the date by which payment must be made. |
|
| Degaussing |
Magnetic stripe data erasure |
|
| Device Card |
An integrated circuit card that carries information (logic and
data); used to configure, operate, and supervise a work station
that accepts integrated circuit cards or contains integrated circuit
card functions. |
|
| Diagnostics |
Verification of proper system and subsystem operations by means
of fault isolation programming techniques. |
|
| Digit |
A numeric value. |
|
| Digital Certificate |
An electronic “credit card” that establishes the user’s credentials
when doing business or other transactions on the Internet. The
certificate contains the user’s name, a serial number, the expiration
dates, a copy of the certificate-holder’s public key and the digital
signature of the certificate-issuing authority to verify the authenticity
of the certificate. |
|
| Digital Optical Laser Card |
A portable card that passively stores information in the form
of high-density marks or bars. |
|
| Digital Signature |
A technique used to prevent denial of a transaction or message
by the sender. A technique used to authenticate a transaction or
message by the sender. The digital signature is generated using
a cryptographic algorithm and information that identifies the user,
including a cryptographic key. Digital signatures do not, by themselves,
prevent the sender from repudiating the message. The sender can
claim that his private signature key was stolen and used by someone
else to fraudulently sign the message. |
|
| Digital Signature Standard (DSS) |
A soon to be adopted standard for generating a non-repudiatable
electronic code linking the user to a specific transaction. The
standard specifies a government developed algorithm call the Digital
Signature Algorithm (DSA). |
|
| Digitizing |
Conversion of non-textual data to digital form, especially in
graphics and image processing. |
|
| Direct Connect Modem |
Modem that connects directly to the telephone system with a
jack as opposed to an acoustic coupler |
|
| Display Telephone |
A telephone with a visual information presentation device for
communicating with the user. |
|
| Distributed Data Processing |
Data processing carried out by a system of commuters connected
in a network and sharing tasks among themselves. |
|
| DOS |
Disk Operating System. Often used to refer specifically to the
MS-DOS operating system developed by Microsoft for personal commuters. |
|
| Double-Copy Voucher |
A sales voucher or receipt printed in duplicate on a EFPOS or
EFTPOS terminal. The cardholder keeps one copy and the card acceptor
keeps the other. |
|
| Down-line Loading |
Loading of data from an acquirer’s computer system to a card
acceptor’s terminal via an intermediate network facility (e.g.
to transmit hot card files). |
|
| Dual Slot |
A telephone handset or other mobile device that has two slots
for chips. One is for the Subscriber Identification Module of
the network operator that resides in the phone, and the other is
for reading the chip on a bankcard. |
|
| Dual-Standard Terminal |
A terminal supporting both DES and RSA cryptosystems. |
|
| Dumb Terminal |
A terminal with no processing capability, unlike an intelligent
terminal. |
|
| Dump |
To copy data to a screen, printer or another storage medium. |
|
| Duplex |
Mode of transmitting data through a modem. Full duplex allows
it to be sent and received simultaneously. Half duplex allows it
to be sent and received simultaneously. Half duplex allows it to
go in only one direction at a time. |
|
| Dynamic Allocation |
A cryptographic exchange of a pseudo random number or time variant
data that mutually authenticates the ICC and the SAM |
